[Homebound] Walk-in Wardrobe Organising and Laundry Care with Method

I’m back to share with you guys another part of our home!

This is the space which we deliberated about for the longest time during our renovation process. And it’s not because we had the typical wife’s-dream-closet-but-husband’s-nightmare kind of debate. In fact, I think Wayne was the one who was more certain we needed the space.

The original layout came with a walk-in wardrobe with pole system. But it was so small, we knew right away that we needed more space than that for our clothes.

We took a long time going back and forth on whether we should expand the walk-in wardrobe because we had to knock down a wall to make it happen and we I was really unsure whether we should lose a (study) room so that we can have a walk-in wardrobe.

Original Layout – Study Room still intact

ID Layout – Wall between Study Room and original WIW knocked down to expand the WIW

We’re glad we went with our final decision because the storage space was sufficient with just a little bit of buffer left and I can finally enjoy having everything within the same room when I’m dressing up!

I was initially quite intimated by the thought of having no doors to hide the mess of my wardrobe (like I conveniently used to) and to keep out the nemesis of WIW – DUST.

I’ll share with you my secret weapon to keep dust at bay in another post, but I’ll share some quick tips on how I try to keep my WIW (looking) organised 🙂

1. Use the Same Type of Hangers

Uniformity of the hangers REALLY makes a lot of difference to the neatness of a WIW. It’s a small investment and while it may take some effort to change your existing hangers to a standardised type, the difference it’s going to make to your wardrobe will be so worth it!

2. Use Slim Hangers

Using slim hangers means you can fit more clothes into the same space and honestly, we all know that we need as much wardrobe space as we can get.

We got our velvet hangers from Taobao during one of the group buys organised by our neighbours. It was so cheap from Taobao that I actually forgot the price of it. But I believe you can get it on other websites and I’ve seen it at a number of local stores as well.

3. Sort first by Type, next by Colour

We first sorted out my clothes and Wayne’s clothes and decided who takes which side of the wardrobe. We then further sort by the type of clothes to be kept in each section of the wardrobe (e.g. shirts, pants, tops, dresses, long dresses, etc). And for each section, we arrange the clothes according to their colours (as much as we can, because prints can be really tricky).

 4. Drawer Dividers for Small Items

Just like how I love the drawer dividers that came with the wardrobe in Laurent’s room, I found the drawer dividers in the display drawer to be extremely useful for organising small items like accessories, belts and ties.

Yenny designed the dividers to be removable so that the display drawer can be more versatile. For one of the drawers, we removed the dividers and used the space to keep our glasses instead.

For the drawers of my dressing table, I just got a few sorting trays from Muji to keep my make-up organised.

5. Keep the Clothes in Great Condition

Having a walk-in wardrobe means that the clothes we own will be in full display. The space will look and feel much more inviting when the clothes are kept in pristine condition and smelling amazing.

We’ve used several different types of laundry detergent previously; powder, liquid, heavily scented, indoor-dry, anti-bacterial, etc, and they all seemed to work okay… At least before I tried using Method’s laundry detergent.

I’ve been quite an avid Method fan since a few years back and I’ve tried most of their products. But I’ve never tried their laundry detergent previously as I used to find it rather expensive, compared to some other brands which come in crazy huge boxes/ bottles at a fraction of the price.

But after using Method’s Laundry Detergent With Smartclean Tech and Fabric Softener, I think it’s really tough for me to go back to using other brands now!

My clothes always come out of the wash and dry cycle feeling soft and clean, and my towels super fluffy! Unlike some detergents and softeners which leave a pungent, perfumed smell on the clothes, my clothes have been smelling nice and fresh.

What I appreciate most, is the design of the pump bottles. With the convenience of the pump bottles, I no longer have to struggle with those crazy-heavy bottles/ boxes of laundry detergent and softener! It’s a lot less messy and more accurate than scooping the power detergent or pouring the detergent from the bottle to the cap and then into the washing machine.

I’ve been using Method’s laundry detergent and softener for a couple of months and my clothes are still in great condition with no cases of the whites becoming dull or the colours becoming lacklustre 🙂

I hope this simple sharing and the quick tips provide some inspiration for you to plan and organise your wardrobe space! Our WIW is a small one, using the existing space under our maisonette staircase. Sometimes I find it a little dark and stuffy… so having one like yours would be a dream come true!

I leave a compartment of the wardrobe empty so that I can hide the mess when I had no time to sort my shopping loot

I have a lot of shirt, but wardrobe too small. Really envy that you have such a big wardrobe. However my wife does not like open concept of the wardrobe because she has to clean it often because get dust easily. Even now our wardrobe is closed all the time, she has to clean the wardrobe once in every 2 months.
